Graduate Record Examination - (GRE)

GRE Stands for Graduate Record Examination. GRE is administered by Education Testing Service (ETS) and is primarily a multiple-choice test that graduate schools use for admission of students into their graduate programs. GRE has general test and subject tests as well. The General Test measures abilities in verbal, quantitative and analytical fields. The Subject Tests measure achievements in specific fields of study. Subject tests are offered in the following Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, English Literature, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology. Some universities require these subject test scores in addition to the general test when applying to the Ph.D. program.

GRE test is given year round. You can take the test during normal business hours. Weekend Tests are also available at many locations. You can register at late as the day just before the test, but spaces do get filled up. So, it's best to register a couple of weeks before you plan to take the test. Students are permitted to re-take the General test only one time per calendar month and only 5 times in a twelve month period.

ETS has announced major changes to GRE. The Major sections would remain same the types of questions would vary. More number of questions on reading comprehension will be added. Analogies and antonyms which were there in the earlier test will not be part of the revised test. The scoring range for each section will be 130-170, with score increments of one point instead of 200-800 (with score increments of 10 points). GRE test takers will be allowed to use calculators issued by ETS. Unlike the current scenario where the test taker cannot skip any question, the new format allow test takers to skip questions and come back to them later and review answers before submitting an entire section. More questions on data analysis will be added.
